What kind of medications do you have scurried away in your bathroom? Maybe you have Midol for PMS, Advil Muscle and Joint for post-workout aches and pains, or Benylin leftover from your last cold? It may be prescription medications from your family doctor or psychiatrist like Zoloft, Paxil, Xanax or Ativan. There’s a pill, cream, spray, powder, or drops for everything, and they’re not working for us. Why? All they do is suppress symptoms, and a suppression of symptoms isn’t a cure, it’s just a band-aid. If it was that easy, we’d all be prime specimens of health! By suppressing symptoms, all we are doing is covering up the signs that something is wrong. It’s like putting a sack over all the traffic lights on your route home, and deciding that’s a cure for traffic congestion. It’s time to start thinking about things a little differently. Let’s imagine you get a splinter embedded deep in your finger. It hurts every time you use your hand, and with every tiny movement that tiny shard of wood is aggravating your finger. You could take a painkiller, as that would stop the pain temporarily but we all know the real issue here is that splinter. The splinter is what is called the root cause of this particular issue. We all intuitively know to remove the splinter, to address the root cause. When you do this your symptoms abate, and your body can heal the wound with no “cure” required. If it’s a chronic issue you might need a Nutritionist or Naturopath to help you get to the bottom of it, just don’t accept your symptoms are a forever thing.
For more complicated things, you need to dig deep into your past health history; things like birth by c-section, frequent antibiotic use as a child, an exotic vacation, dental work, or looking for past traumatic events. The root cause may not be 100% clear even when you’re working with a practitioner, but their knowledge of the many possible mechanisms behind your symptoms, combined with some smart investigative work, will give them educated approaches to addressing your health issues. At Truehope we’re always looking for the root cause, and encourage you to do the same. It takes some critical thinking on how to best address your health issues, but it always works out to be the most successful course of action.
